The 5 Sins of Management

26 August, 2014 by James Lawther 2 Comments

Deadly diseases

In 1982 W. Edwards Deming wrote about the 5 deadly diseases that inflict most organisations:

  1. Lack of constancy of purpose
  2. Emphasis on short-term profits
  3. Evaluation of performance
  4. Mobility of management
  5. Running a company on visible figures alone

Are we still infected?

30 years on have we found a cure?  Have a look at the slide share below and let me know what you think.

And yes, I know they were diseases not sins, but I liked the picture — not that I have remotely dumbed this down in any way…

About the Author

James Lawther
James Lawther

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.
