The Dilbert Paradox

24 August, 2010 by James Lawther 2 Comments

Most managers will tell you that talent is the key to organisational success.  Organisations spend millions on executive search and management development, tracking down and creating the best and the brightest.

So?  If engaging talent is the biggest management issue why is the Dilbert cartoon so popular?

Once we have expended all this energy tracking down the best and brightest why do we confine them to a 9am to 5pm existence doing pointless jobs that they can’t get excited about?

Could you do something about that?

James Lawther

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.

Hello, I got the link to your site via a friend. 12years after setting up your post the situation remains as relevant today as when you brought it the attention of everyone.

Thank you Maurice; I suspect it will be relevant in another 12 years as well.
