Where are you Going? Will you get There?

18 May, 2014 by James Lawther 3 Comments

The greatest show in the world

The Cirque du Soleil is arguably the greatest circus in the world. The reviews are outstanding:

So scarily brave that I wanted to watch through my fingers ~ The Independent

The abstract eroticism of this act alone is worth the price of admission ~ The Express

Inhuman perfection ~ The Guardian

I was thinking of signing up… until I read the last review

The numbers match the reviews

If you have seen a show you will have your own views, but the facts and figures are hard to ignore:

  • 19 shows in over 271 cities on every continent except Antarctica
  • Shows in Las Vegas that have an audience of 9,000 people, every night
  • Annual revenues of over 810 million US Dollars.

Not bad for an organisation founded in 1984 by two street performers.

The money isn’t the interesting bit

The Cirque Du Soleil’s stated aim is to:

“Invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world

As a born cynic I have to say that makes me feel a little more than queasy, but before I start on the barbed comments it is worth a look at where their aim has taken them:

  • A fitness programme ~ Jukari fit to fly
  • A poster business ~ Safewalls
  • Art exhibits and “cultural action“
  • A clothing collection ~ Desigual
  • An add in for your browser ~ Movi Kanti Revo
  • And a social programme to help young people ~ Cirque du Monde

A little focus can take you an awfully long way… But as the video will show you, the really important thing is momentum.

If you don’t know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else ~ Yogi Berra

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.

    James,

The shows are amazing… definitely a crazy pursuit of excellence and perfection. To answer your question posed in the title… yes, a relentless focus on where you want to go/be will get you there. The problem for many, though, is, as the Yogi Berra quote states, you must know where you are going.

    James,
I wonder……do you really need to know where you are going? Or, is it more important to know how you want to to travel?

A good question Adrian, I don’t suppose it matters as long as you are moving
