The Problem with Analytics

15 May, 2011 by James Lawther 3 Comments

We have become obsessed by analytics or “the application of computer technology, operational research, and statistics to solve problems in business and industry”.

Analytics uses databases and algorithms in an attempt to resolve problems.  Analytics uses infographics to present data.

The problem with analytics

This is not the same as analysis or “the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it”.

Analysis uses mathematics and logic in an attempt to resolve problems.  Analysis uses graphs to present data.

Old School Graph

Analytics is new and sexy.

Analysis comes to the point.

Do you want to look clever or be clever?

James Lawther

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.

I think that the way in which an idea is put over is very important.

If the infographic wins people over then it is worth the effort of putting it together

Yes, I think the way in which you communicate has to win people over, but I think clarity is crucial if you need to win them over.
