Are you Awake? Or Sleeping?

27 April, 2011 by James Lawther Leave a Comment

I didn’t sleep well last night, I tossed and turned, I kept looking at the alarm clock flashing away

11:45, 12:03, 01:42, 02:56, 03:37, 05:23

Blink, Blink, Blink

I didn’t get a wink of sleep.  Have you been there?

The truth of the matter is that each time I woke and looked at the clock I promptly rolled over and fell back to sleep.  I was only conscious of my time awake because the rest of the time I was, well, unconscious.

And that is the point, we only worry about the issues we are conscious of:

  • If you service washing machines no doubt you are paranoid about getting to the customer on time, but once you are there do you have the parts you need?
  • If you collect taxes I bet you focus on the taxes that didn’t get collected much more than the ones that did, even if the amount was wrong.
  • If you make sandwiches do you obsess about the quality of the food ignoring the fact that customers are 20 deep at the counter and turning around at the door.

What are you unconscious of that you really should worry about?

Why not spend 20 minutes with a pencil, paper and a cup of tea thinking about it?  It might be a wake up call.

Concious Concerns

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.
