When Does Real Learning Happen?

9 March, 2016 by Tanmay Vora 3 Comments

Learning…

The real learning, happens when:

  • You are driven by an intrinsic need to advance and not only by external rewards
  • You ask more questions to get to the why of things — and then to what and how
  • When you look for process and patterns in discrete situations
  • And when you use your understanding to connect the dots and look at a larger picture
  • You experience, execute, iterate and test your hypothesis
  • You reflect deeply on your experiences
  • And when you share your lessons with others so that they can learn and contribute
  • And engage others meaningfully in collaborative problem solving
  • You are able to collect, synthesize and process information from varied sources
  • You unlearn  and let go of the old ways of thinking and doing
  • You apply lessons to the unique needs of the context

Learning really happens when you overcome the fear of making mistakes

    I like the list Tanmay, and am also a big fan of your sketch notes, thanks for pulling it together.

    Your last point about fear really resonates with me

      Absolutely Macey, I think you hit the nail right on the head. How are we supposed to learn anything if we are scared? It makes a mockery of our education system if children are always faced with exams and the repercussions of not doing well.

    Hello Tanmay,
    Great list. I’d like to share my experience when I have undergone real learning:

    The topic at hand is highly relevant, even critical, to some situation and outcomes that I am striving for and have to attain;

    I come from nothing – which is to say I put aside my prejudices etc – and truly listen for that which I need to learn;

    I try out the learning in the real world so that the learning become embodied;

    I reflect on that which has happened – the outcome- and revise my theory / approach as needed; and

    I apply myself, with my learning, to the real world situation that I am dealing with.

    All the best
    maz
